BTECH FACT SHEET

BTECH is the innovative youth community technology center operated by Fairfield Youth Advocacy, Inc. in Fairfield, Iowa. The U.S. Department of Education has recently awarded $300,000 to create this unique opportunity for SE Iowa youth.

The technology center expanded out of The Beatbox, the initial program of the parent organization, FYA. The Beatbox teen center has successfully addressed youth challenges with a unique young adult mentoring model, and has designed this technology center in accordance with progressive educational practices.

BTECH will provide:

· Free hi-tech training in a flexible learning environment
· Multi-lingual instructors, childcare, transportation
· Atmosphere of unconditional positive regard

Certified Network Associate/Cisco Certified Network Professional Training

· The most advanced computer network training in the world
· Cost of final certification exam included
· Training normally costs $10,000 per person and is available at select locations
· Certification results in highly paying jobs
· Six-month course requires dedication, but no specific background
· Part-time day and/or evening schedule

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Certification Training

· Provides knowledge and skills necessary to install, configure, and administrate Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
· Completed within two months on a part-time evening schedule
· Offers important industry certification


Basic Digital Film Production Workshop

· Offers basic understanding of techniques and technologies used in
digital film production - pre-production, production, and post-production hands-on skill development
· Twice weekly class sessions, twice weekly lab sessions -production sessions scheduled by student
· Two month course
· Results in the completion of four short digital films
· Public premiere of students' final productions


Basic Web Design Workshop

· Provides hands-on practice in techniques and technologies
· Two month course - two hour class session twice a week
mentored sessions
· Teaches application of HTML to basic web site design
· Trains in JavaScript, Gif animation, Flash, and PERL
· Results in completion of a website

Career Lab and Employment Readiness Program

· Provides career counseling, job development, and job seeking skills
· Assessment of behavioral strengths and weaknesses, interests, and aptitude
· Some programs available in English, Spanish, French, or German
· Individualized career counseling
· Workshops on job seeking skills, resume writing, and career
planning
· Provides established linkages with several institutions and agencies in southeast Iowa

Basic Office Skills

· Self-paced, interactive software designed to teach basic PC skills, Microsoft Office, (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
· Provides the skills needed to perform in today's office environment.
